- Background Information:
- Aequorin from Aequorea sp. (jellyfish) has been purified to homogeneity and sequenced from cDNA cloning into different hosts. The Aequorin protein is composed of 189 amino acids formed into a hydrophobic core region where coelenterzine is bound to what is believed to be a peroxidized form since molecular oxygen is not needed for light emission. The protein has a molecular weight of 21.7 kDa, the pI is 4.2-4.9, lambda max 470 nm, and soluble in water at 10 mg/mL.
